Vamana Ekadashi is also known as Parsva Ekadashi, Jayanti and Jaljhilini Ekadashi. The day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vamana, one of the avatars of Lord Vishnu is worshipped on the day.
It falls in the Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month. This year, it will be celebrated on 13th of September, 2016. A strict fast is observed in order to ask forgiveness for the past committed sins.
The fast falls in the Chaturmas period which is considered very auspicious.
The legend behind the festive day is that Lord Vishnu change his sleeping position from left to right and thus it is known as Parsva Ekadashi.

It is said that sins of the past life ends and sins of the present life are pardoned. Devotees seek the divine blessings of Lord Vishnu.
Devotees must eat satvik food on the day before it, that is 10th lunar day. It is done in order to get free from all negativities.
The fast is meant to be nirjala but Hindu scriptures allow unwell devotees to eat fruits on the day.
Rice, honey and grains are strictly refrained. The fast controls the body and feelings and thus purify heart and soul.

Devotees should read Vishnu sahastranam and chant the bhajans and mantras all day and meditate.
The fast ends on the 12th lunar day after giving food to a Brahmin. Eating of brinjal is strictly not allowed.
It is said that devotees who keep this fast are blessed with prosperity, wealth and happiness.
